Dennis Lehane was born August 4, 1966 and raised in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston, Massachusetts. He is the youngest of five children. Both of his parents immigrated from Ireland.
He has written seven novels;
1.) A Drink Before the War 2.) DarknessTake My Hand 3.) Sacred, 4.) Gone Baby Gone, 5.) Prayers for Rain, 6.) Mystic River and 7.) Shutter Island.
Mystic River was made into an Academy Award winning film of the same name, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Kevin Bacon, Tim Robbins and Sean Penn. The novel was a finalist for the PEN/Winship Award and won both the Barry and Anthony Awards for Best Novel.
Lehane attended Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. It is there that he reportedly found his passion for writing. He then moved to the Florida International University's nationally recognized graduate creative writing program for his masters degree. At FIU, Lehane studied under novelist James W. Hall.
In May 2005, Lehane was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Eckerd College where he was appointed to the Board of Trustees.
Before becoming a full-time writer, Lehane worked in a number of varied jobs. He served as a counselor with mentally handicapped and abused children, waited tables, parked cars, worked in bookstores, drove limos and loaded tractor-trailers.
Lehane's first book, A DRINK BEFORE THE WAR (1994) introduced his recurring characters Ptrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro. The book won the 1995 Shamus award for Best First P.I. Novel.
Lehane (pictured above on the dust jacket of his 2008 novel THE GIVEN DAY) has also written plays (Coronado), award winning short stories (UNTIL GWEN) and episodes for television, including two for the HBO drama series THE WIRE.
Lehane normally lives in the Boston area with his wife Sheila, who is an advocate for the elderly in the city of Boston, although in 2006 he was a temporary resident of St. Petersburg, Florida where he was teaching as the writer-in-residence at Eckerd College.
