He was born in Pennsylvania, lived for several years in the Caribbean, and now resides in Florida. In 1985 he won the National Book Award for the short story collection EASY IN THE ISLANDS, and in 1989 his second collection, THE NEXT NEW WORLD, won the Prix de Rome. His first novel, SWIMMING IN THE VOLCANO, was published in 1993.
Bob Schacochis has been a columnist for GQ magazine as well as a contributing editor for both OUTSIDE magazine and HARPER'S. His journalism appears frequently in other national publications.
